Position Description 

The Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District is seeking college students with passion for teaching and environmental education to participate in our Clean Air Ambassadors Program starting April 2024, and continue for 2024-2025 school year. This is a paid, part-time position with a $17/hour starting pay and flexible schedule up to 15 hours per week. Clean Air Ambassadors will work remotely, in the District's Santa Barbara office, as well as travel to schools throughout Santa Barbara County. 

Job Duties:

-Co-teach the hands-on, interactive curriculum in elementary school classrooms with fellow Ambassadors;
-Solicit teacher participation in Santa Barbara County by conducting targeted outreach;
-Assist with the ongoing development of an elementary-level curriculum and engaging activities related to air pollution and its impacts;
-As needed, work at the District’s outreach booth at community events throughout Santa Barbara County, such as Earth Day or school science/STEM events.

Qualifications: 

-Interest in and enthusiasm for teaching and/or environmental education;
-Comfortable interacting with children in elementary school settings;
-Interest to learn basic understanding of air quality concepts;
-Previous work experience with elementary age children (including coaching, camp counselor and/or other related experience);
-Consistent morning availability for classroom visits;
-Must have access to a vehicle and the ability to travel throughout Santa Barbara County (travel costs are reimbursed to the Ambassador);
-Ability to work with other Ambassadors as part of a team.

Eligible applicants will be interviewed between April 1-12, 2024.

Responses to the required supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated and scored. Candidates’ final score and rank on the eligibility list will be determined by their responses to the supplemental questionnaire. Applicants must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the supplemental questionnaire ranking to be placed on the eligibility list.

Once a conditional offer of employment has been made, the candidate will be required to successfully complete a background check, which includes a conviction history check.
