Position Description 

Explore Ecology is in search of a UCSB student intern to aid in coordinating 2024 Coastal
Cleanup Day (CCD) and educational activities at the Watershed Resource Center (WRC).
This opportunity is available to current UCSB undergraduates, graduating seniors, and
graduate students. Coastal Cleanup Day, led by the California Coastal Commission, is an
annual event dedicated to cleaning up beaches throughout California. The WRC, situated at
Arroyo Burro (Hendry’s) Beach in Santa Barbara, serves as an educational hub for school
trips, educational programs, and community gatherings. Explore Ecology manages both the WRC and CCD on behalf of the County of Santa Barbara.
 

Job duties will include, but are not limited to:
● Assisting with the coordination of CCD events including managing data, distributing
supplies, and creating promotional materials
● Work alongside the PR Director and Environmental Education team to create content,
including Instagrams, Tik Toks, live streams, etc.
● Collaborating with UCSB student groups to further Explore Ecology’s mission and
educate the UCSB community about local water quality issues and solutions
● Host a CCD site near UCSB
● Run and attend events, including monthly beach cleanups, science nights, and other
outreach events
● Communicate with volunteers and community members to coordinate Site Captains,
local prize donations, and ensure swift operations on CCD
 

Required Skills and Experience:
● Environmental and/or communication background
● Experience with social media and/or enthusiasm to learn
● Self-starter and ability to work independently
● Strong organizational skills
● Creativity
● Good communication and public speaking skills
● Passionate about preserving and protecting California’s coastal ecosystems
 

Preferred Skills and Experience:
● Bilingual English/Spanish
● Graphic design experience
● Video editing experience
 

This internship is funded through a grant from UCSB Coastal Fund and is open to enrolled
UCSB students. The internship will run from May-October 2024 for a total of 200 hours
(approx. 10 hrs/week). The position requires in-person work and allows for some remote
work. Compensation for this position is $16.30/hr.
