ES Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator (Student Assistant Position)
Position Description
UCSB’s Environmental Studies Program is in a unique position to strengthen its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion by hiring an undergraduate Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator to help with implementing our departmental DEI projects. To date, ES has made notable progress in recruiting a diverse faculty, staff, and student population, and pursuing research, teaching, and service initiatives supportive of diversity, equity and inclusion, but we can do even better and are looking for an undergraduate to help us get there.
Under the direction of Department Chair Simone Pulver, DEI Faculty Lead Summer Gray, Business Officer Andrea McCourt, and the ES Student Advising Team, the Diversity and Inclusion Coordinator would assist in coordinating various initiatives relating to our department’s DEI Action Plan, as well as offering ideas to strengthen and follow-through with these projects. Some of the specific responsibilities include:
Event Planning and Coordination:
- Plan and coordinate student-focused events related to diversity and inclusion on behalf of the Environmental Studies Program.
- Assist faculty and staff with their event coordination as needed including outreach to engage diverse student audiences.
- Coordinate with our ES Finance Team on food/purchases/reimbursements/honorariums for our DEI events.
Content Creation:
- Create content for the ES Program Instagram, website, and newsletter.
- Ensure that content reflects our diverse student body and student needs.
- Lead the development of ES Stories, interviewing students to showcase their experiences within the program.
Communications:
- Manage student-focused email communications.
- Create flyers and materials to promote diversity and inclusion events.
Peer Advising:
- Build relationships with student groups and clubs that are working to foster a sense of community and inclusivity at UCSB.
- Compile a database of Environmental Justice opportunities on and off-campus to help students gain experience in this field.
- Host peer advising events to help first-year & transfer students better understand what diversity/EJ opportunities are available.
Note: The role may evolve over time and could involve additional tasks related to promoting diversity and inclusion within the Environmental Studies Program.
