Student Assistant- Public Policy
Position Description
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) Safety Policy Division is seeking to hire one (1) Public Policy Student Assistant who can assist in resolving complex public policy problems. The public policy student assistant will assist with special projects related to the risk-based decision-making framework proceeding (R.20-07-013), such as conducting summaries of comments from stakeholders or coordinate workshops with industry stakeholders under the close supervision of Senior Public Utilities Regulatory Analysts. The Safety Policy Division’s public policy student assistant role will provide a rewarding and challenging opportunity for the student assistant to gain hands-on experience working on public policy while following government guidelines. The student assistant will obtain the ability to analyze data and present ideas, as well as gain and maintain the confidence and cooperation of stakeholders in day-to-day work.
Majors/Fields of Study:
Public Policy, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Anthropology, Business Administration, Management Studies or any Social Science or Business-related field of study
Work Schedule:
Flexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer).
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
- Ability to:
- Reason logically and creatively and utilize a variety of analytical techniques to resolve complex governmental problems.
- Develop and evaluate alternatives.
- Analyze data and present ideas and information effectively, both orally and in writing.
- Gain and maintain the confidence and cooperation of those contacted during the course of work.

Duties and Responsibilities:
- Prepare correspondence, reports, and surveys, and present relevant data.
- Provide technical support in formal proceedings before the Commission, proofread briefing documents for accuracy and consistency, review briefing documents for typological and formatting errors, perform policy research.
- Coordinate workshops and working group meetings with a wide variety of industry stakeholders.
- Provide support for updating the RDF Proceeding’s website.
- Conduct summaries of comments provided by stakeholders in response to the Commission issuing formal documents for review by stakeholders.
- Work with the project lead to brainstorm solutions to conflicting viewpoints within the comments.
- Assist with presenting the content of the comment summaries to decision-makers.
- Perform other work-related duties as required.
Compensation:
$19.60-$24.10 per hour
