Position Description 

The Watershed Brigade Interns assist SBCK’s Program Assistant in implementing the Watershed Brigade Marine Debris Removal program (https://www.sbck.org/brigade/). The Watershed Brigade is a community- based, litter removal program that incentivizes participation through monthly events, social media engagement, and volunteer recognition. The Watershed Brigade Intern will be responsible for implementing core aspects of the program.

Primary Duties:
• Participating in and leading trash cleanups events, which occur on weekends
• Working with SBCK staff to curate monthly Watershed Brigade events
• Identifying trash hotspots for cleanup events and investigating trash hotspots reported by volunteers
• Assisting in the distribution and maintenance of cleanup supplies
• Assisting with program communication and volunteer outreach by responding to all community
Facebook and Instagram posts in a timely manner
• Assisting with creating social media and eNewsletter content
• Implementing data entry protocols to track volunteer participation and program impact
Additional tasks may include:
• Assisting Channelkeeper with outreach events
• Assisting Channelkeeper with fundraiser events

Requirements:
• Must be a current UCSB undergraduate.
• Physical ability to walk and/or hike on uneven terrain (trails or beaches) and to lift/carry up to 40 pounds
• Ability to interact with and lead volunteers during cleanup events
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Attention to detail and reliability
• Experience with Microsoft Excel and Google sheets
• Creating and curating exciting social media content
• Ability to work independently in the office and in the field
• Passion about environmental issues, in particular litter and marine debris
• Willingness to get out in the community to independently scope out trash hotspots for cleanup events or
investigate trash reports
• Maintain a valid driver’s license
• Access to personal automotive transportation (mileage reimbursed per IRS standard mileage rate)

Desirable Qualifications:
• Spanish language fluency
• Creativity, passion, and excitement for environmental problem solving
• Experience conducting environmental education and public speaking
