Celia Alario Talks Sustainable Leadership

Celia Alario, life coach and environmental activist trainer, joined ELI students for a virtual session on sustainable leadership.  In a program about the environment, one could mistake "sustainable" here for meaning conservation initiatives, or sustaining earth's limited resources, which is what many of our students work on.  However, for this session, sustainable leadership focused on sustaining oneself as a leader.  Many in the environmental field face burnout and fatigue, as environmental work and activism is often an uphill battle.  Celia taught students to consider self care and the physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual aspects of a leadership and of oneself.  These aspects often fall to the wayside in favor of community, livelihood, and planet but are just as important.

ELI students benefited from this time to focus, make space, and grow as leaders and individuals.  Strategies they choose to adopt from Celia's session will benefit them during the stressful end of quarter and help them maintain motivation and overcome challenges as they implement their environmental leadership projects in the winter and spring sessions.
