Expanding on a previous ELI project, “Re-Envisioning Recycling,” ELI student Izzy Ribondo is collecting plastic film types #2 and #4 for recycling.

Commonly found in items like plastic bags, mailers, and food item packaging, these materials are not consistently accepted in standard recycling bins, leaving many students unaware that they often end up in landfills. Without clear labeling, these plastics are frequently missorted and end up in the ocean.

To address this, Izzy launched a hands-on collection initiative as part of the previous ELI Project. During the Winter Quarter of the 2025–2026 academic year, through bi-weekly pickups from the Amazon Locker in Isla Vista, she collected over 20 pounds of plastic film in just ten weeks. Building on this success, she expanded the project in the Spring by placing donation bins across campus. Donated by MarBorg Industries, these bins not only collect materials but also educate users through clear instructions and simple “stretch and tear” tests to help identify acceptable plastics. These bins are located in Ellison Hall (1st floor), Bren Hall (2nd floor), and the Multicultural Center (1st floor). Additionally, Izzy collected thin-film plastics at community events such as Santa Barbara Earth Day and educated visitors about plastic recycling.

Collected materials are processed locally in Santa Barbara by Planet Protectors and then sent to NexTrex, where they are transformed into durable products like decking and outdoor furniture. By creating a system that both diverts waste and raises awareness, “Re-Envisioning Recycling” encourages students to rethink everyday habits and engage more consciously with their consumption.
