Position Description 

The On-Call Habitat Restoration Landscape Technician plays an integral role in the restoration of native plants and the removal of non-native or invasive plant species to help restore habitat in sensitive and unique natural areas. In this entry-level role, you will gain the knowledge and experience to identify native and non-native plant and animal species.

In a team environment, your responsibilities will involve working outdoors. These include but are not limited to, planting native plants, installing irrigation systems, removing weeds using assorted tools and methods, and other physical tasks. Our work takes us to job sites on the mainland of Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Los Angeles Counties. We are fortunate to work in beautiful environments with great people!

Although our work is hard and physically demanding at times and field conditions vary, you will make a direct environmental impact every day. CIR also provides additional opportunities to expand your professional development and learn about the environment, including training, webinars, workshops, and educational events.

Hours/Location

  • Though our work takes place in Santa Barbara, Ventura, and occasionally LA counties, at this time we are only hiring staff who are able to commute regularly to our Ventura County job sites (this includes jobs in the Santa Paula and Thousand Oaks areas, as well as other parts of Ventura County).
  • This is an on-call entry-level position; we anticipate up to 40 hours per week of work during the busy season from the fall to late spring, and up to 20 hours per week during the summer, though we cannot guarantee a minimum number of hours during any time of the year. This will be dependent on both your availability as well as our active jobs.

Qualifications
• Willing and able to learn about native plants and weeds
• Willing and able to work in physically demanding environments and weather
• Willing and able to work as part of a team and independently
• Careful, conscientious and pay attention to detail
• Great work ethic, able to work efficiently, enthusiastic, and have a positive disposition
• A California driver’s license and able to drive your own car to job sites
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 40 pounds
• Ability to hike over steep, rugged terrain with frequently unstable rocky substrate while carrying
hand tools and heavy backpack sprayers
• Willing to wear safety gear including but not limited to, coveralls, hiking boots, gloves, and
goggles
• All employees must adhere to the company’s Injury and Illness Prevention Program
• All applicants for employment must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 and will be asked to
submit proof of vaccination and booster

Skills and Knowledge Appreciated but Not Required
• Prior experience and knowledge using hand and power tools
• Prior experience and knowledge installing and repairing irrigation systems
• Knowledge in identification of native and non-native plants
• Knowledge in data collection and navigation using GIS applications on mobile phones

Wages/Pay Scale
Starting at $20 per hour, with a maximum compensation for this role being $27.00 per hour. Starting compensation is based on experience and can be increased with time and trainings.
