Education+, a UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) campus organization that provides tutoring and mentoring to public schools kids, continues to expand and seeks volunteers, according to a recent article in Santa Barbara-based online news source, Edhat.

UCSB student volunteers provide homework help, enrichment, and specialty Zoom rooms for free to public school kids. Education+ began as an ELI project by Jessica Lickstein, a fourth-year sociology major and education minor. Originally focusing on environmental justice, Education+ has since expanded its scope to include general tutoring and mentoring of kids in public schools in Goleta, Santa Barbara and Carpinteria, with a focus on underserved families.

Since its inception, Education+ has typically recruited about 40 undergraduate students each quarter. Volunteers most often engage with students who need help with homework and getting caught up on late assignments. There are also weekly group classes in coding and Spanish, with plans this winter to offer STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education. All support is offered through Zoom. Education+ welcomes volunteers with a variety of backgrounds.
